33 rue Lacepede, Paris 5
Sept. 14, 1961
My dear Cindy,This is the little note I promised you: I arrived Monday night (the 11th) in Paris. My friends were waiting at the train for me, we went to dinner together and drank some Beaujolais, and then I went home where a pile of mail was waiting for me. Unfortunately, many bills in that pile, and even the annual letter from the tax collector.Paris is magnificent. Les chestnut trees who are the first to return are the first to turn red., an they wear the colors of autumn against a sky still summery. I haven’t yet had time to take a walk, I just ran a few errands, but as I walked the streets I imagined how I would “ explain” Paris to you if I were walking with you and my American friends who promised to come and see me.Please call Jean and Stan to tell them I had a good crossing and also that I will write soon—when I ‘ve made some order around me. Write soon, at length with beautiful legible penmanship, and tell me how it was to go back to school. Love and kisses, Charlotte
